Hudson’s Bay Takes “Steps to Contain”
“We have identified the issue, and have taken steps to contain it,” a company spokesman said. “Once we have more clarity around the facts, we will notify our customers quickly and will offer those impacted free identity protection services, including credit and web monitoring.”
Known Criminal Organization Allegedly Behind Attack
Gemini Advisory, a security firm in New York, first reported in its blog last week that Hudson’s Bay had been hacked by JokerStash syndicate, also known as Fin. 7. JokerStash is an underground criminal organization known to sell stolen data and has allegedly been responsible for several other major data breaches over the years. Gemini Advisory reported that JokerStash had announced a breach of a major corporation on March 28, 2018, with plans to release over five million credit cards. Preliminary data have suggested that the siphoning began in May 2017 and that most cards obtained were from New York and New Jersey locations.
About 125,000 payment cards have been released as of April 2, 2018, and about 75% of those appear to be Hudson’s customer cards, Gemini Advisory told Reuters.
It has been reported that JokerStash was the group behind other major breaches such as Whole Foods, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Omni Hotels, and Trump Hotels and are known to release data in small batches as to not flood the underground market all at once.
Hudson’s Bay Shares Drop
Hudson’t Bay shares have dropped as much as 6.2% after the news of the security breach at some of its Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks Off 5th, and Lord & Taylor stores this week.
