Facebook Announces Serious Security Incident
Facebook has recently announced a security incident which has potentially compromised 50 million users’ personal data. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that attackers using developer API’s were able to obtain information such as “name, gender, and hometowns” linked to personal profiles but that the investigation is still underway.
In a blog post September 28th, Facebook’s VP of Product Management said:
“Our investigation is still in its early stages. But it’s clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that impacted “View As” a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else. This allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over people’s accounts. Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they don’t need to re-enter their password every time they use the app.”
Since we’ve only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed. We also don’t know who’s behind these attacks or where they’re based.”
The company also said they have informed law enforcement.
How Do I Know If My Data Was Compromised?
Facebook has published this image of a security update message that you may have received if your profile data was potentially exposed. If you recall being abruptly logged out of Facebook and also seeing this seeing this message after logging back in, you may be one of the millions whose personal data has been compromised.
