Studies

April, 2014 –  Journal of American Medical Association published the results of a study in which researchers had reviewed data from over 25,000 participants, comparing mens usage of Viagra with men who do not and their risk of developing melanoma. It was found that:

  • Men who had a history of using the drug were twice as likely to develop melanoma
  • Men currently taking the drug were 84% more likely to develop melanoma

Researchers took into consideration other factors such as medical history, ultra violet light exposure, other types of cancer, major illnesses and the outcome remained the same. They were also able to rule out that merely having erectile dysfunction is not associated with an increased risk of developing the cancer.

Had Pfizer clearly warned anyone considering using the drug, it may have significantly decreased sales of the product.

Pfizer introduced Viagra into the marketplace in 1998 through direct-to-consumer marketing. They aggressively marketed the drug as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and the drug currently generates more than $2 billion in annual sales.

It appears now that critical information may have been withheld about the risk of melanoma to both men who took the drug and the medical community. Had Pfizer clearly warned anyone considering using the drug, it may have significantly decreased sales of the product.

It has been alleged through lawsuits across the United States that Pfizer:

  • Failed to adequately research the side effects of Viagra
  • Failed to provide sufficient skin cancer warnings for Viagra users, which may have allowed melanoma to be diagnosed earlier
  • Failed to update the Viagra warnings after it became clear men were more likely to develop melanoma
  • Failed to issue a Viagra recall or otherwise ensure men using the medication were aware of the cancer risk
